The One Off commissioned me to create a mural for Nike for a new sports shop in Manchester. The brief was very open, but they asked that I leave some timber boarding behind the mural exposed to reflect the industrial nature of the shop fit-out.
For this piece, I wanted to focus on iconic elements of both Manchester and Nike. To represent Manchester, I included black and yellow stripes, which are synonymous with the city and the Haçienda Nightclub. I also included the Manchester area code '0161' which, despite the decline in landline use, has been kept relevant in my eyes by the Manchester Music scene. As well as the Nike Swoosh, the piece includes other more subtle references to Nike, which have always sparked my interest visually. The red pattern is inspired by the elephant crack pattern used by Nike's Jordan brand, and the colour palette is inspired by various Nike products, particularly their NikeCourt logo, which I've always found visually appealing.
